Australian Student Visa Update: Higher Fees & Onshore Application Changes (2024)

Attention international students considering Australia for your studies! There have been some significant changes to the Australian student visa process as of July 1, 2024.

  • Increased Visa Fees: The Australian government has more than doubled the student visa application fee, going from A$710 to A$1,600. This aims to address the high volume of visa applications and manage the pressure on housing caused by a record number of immigrants.

  • Onshore Application Restrictions: Visitor visa holders and those with temporary graduate visas can no longer apply for a student visa while they are already in Australia. You will now need to submit your application from outside the country.

What does this mean for you?

  • Budget for the higher application fee when planning your studies in Australia.

  • If you were hoping to transition from a visitor or temporary graduate visa to a student visa, you will need to return to your home country and apply from there.

Government's Stance:

The Australian Home Affairs Minister views these changes as a way to ensure a "fairer, smaller, and better" migration system. They believe it will also improve the integrity of the international education system.
